The Reasons Behind Septoplasty
Transcript
Hello - and welcome to the second video in my 4-part video series - on nasal reshaping surgery. In my practice - there are three main reasons I perform septoplasty. Firstly, to improve access for sinus surgery - A straight septum allows for better visibility and precision when treating blocked or infected sinuses. Secondly - septoplasty is often needed as part of a combined procedure called functional septorhinoplasty. This treats both breathing problems, and the outer shape of the nose in 1 surgery. And third, I offer septoplasty for patients with clear one-sided blockage - where the septum is severely bent and touching the side-wall. However: if a patient has an obvious crooked nose or nasal bump, then it's better to address both the function and shape together. It is also important to know that a deviated septum is not usually the main cause of snoring. If a bent septum has been present for years, but snoring is recent, it's likely due to weight gain, sleep position, or soft tissue collapse. For patients - with both a severe septal bend, and sleep disordered breathing - septoplasty may help. But it would be part of a full plan - that might include weight loss, sleeping on your side, or devices that help keep the airway open. Thank you for watching - If you are considering Septoplasty, then please get in touch. I also recommend watching the next video - which covers functional septorhinoplasty.
