An Introduction to Septoplasty
Transcript
Hello - and welcome to my 4-part video series on nasal reshaping surgery. This first video introduces Septoplasty - a surgical procedure used to correct bent cartilage, and bone that separates the two sides of your nose - also known as a deviated septum. Many people assume it's a simple fix - but it's not always that straightforward. In my practice - I don't believe in offering surgery - unless there's a clear benefit. That means your symptoms, exam findings, and imaging all need to support the decision to operate. Sometimes, nasal blockage is caused by inflammation rather than structure. Conditions like hay-fever or chronic sinus problems can make the nose feel blocked - even when the septum is straight. That's why I always recommend a trial of nasal steroid sprays, or drops. These reduce inflammation in the nose and can often improve breathing, without the need for surgery. Another concern is how septoplasty is sometimes performed. It's a procedure that looks simple, but requires a detailed understanding of nasal anatomy. And poor results can happen when surgery is done without specialist training. Fixing a deviated septum isn't just about cutting and straightening cartilage. It's about restoring support and stability so the improvement lasts - while also ensuring the nose looks natural after surgery. I use advanced techniques - like reattaching cartilage to bone, adding small support grafts, and adjusting how the septum fits with surrounding structures. All these methods are designed to prevent future collapse; or distortion of the nose. There's also a myth that any deviation causes symptoms. It's not true - a mild bend may be harmless. What matters is whether the septum is touching the nasal wall - and physically blocking airflow on one side. Thank you for watching; If you are considering Septoplasty then please get in touch. I also recommend watching the next video in the series, where I explain some of the reasons why I perform Septoplasty.
